Environmental Responsibility

The fashion industry accounts for about 10% of global carbon emissions, and nearly 20% of wastewater. Our goal is to shrink our foot print on the planet both as a brand and as human beings. Here's what we're doing!

Carbon Offset

Since our website is hosted on Shopify, we have recently opted-in to offset the shipments of all of our deliveries using the app "Offset". Offset uses industry models to determine the amount of CO2 that is released into the atmosphere for each shipment, and then charges us an amount per shipment to offset those emissions. The funds collected from us on a monthly basis are used to purchase carbon credits, which offset our emissions through deforestation protection projects through Pachama.

Because Offset’s goal is to make sure that your CO2 shipping emissions are offset entirely, all values that are used in the data models are rounded up. For each shipment that is delivered, Offset uses the following data: Weight, distance, and type of transportation.

When a tracking number from a supported carrier is supplied, Offset can accurately calculate the emissions used. However, when no tracking is available (such as our $5.00 no tracking shipping option) or the shipping carrier is not supported, Offset multiplies the estimated emissions by an uncertainty factor of about 1.5. This helps make sure that all your emissions are offset. If any data is inconsistent or missing, then Offset uses a reasonable maximum value instead.

Fabrics & Sourcing

Most of our products are made from 100% cotton which keeps micro-plastics out of the ocean. Our eco poly-blend shirts contain approximately 4 recycled RPET bottles per shirt. And lastly, our organic cotton and bamboo loungewear is made sustainably in Toronto, Canada.

No matter what product we source or from where, we always prioritize working with the best suppliers who produce clothing ethically.

Packaging & Supplies

We are proud to say that our packing materials are nearly plastic free! We use compostable poly-mailers, heat-transfer shipping labels and our clothing tags are made of paper. Aside from the packing tape here and there to water-proof hand written shipping labels as well as our clothing tag strings which have a small plastic clasp, our plastic output is almost zero.

Made from a combination of corn-based biopolymers, the Compostable Mailer composts in 6 months (180 days) and is certified for both home and commercial compost.

Up-cycling Our Own Waste

When a customer chooses one of our raw-edge cropped options for an eligible product, we are left with 5-10 inches of scrap material. We've been collecting this material since the beginning and have hired local makers to transform our scraps into totally new Octopied Mind products! From Plant hangers to scrunchies to face masks, up-cycling our scrap material has helped us keep more than 100 pounds of product out of landfills.

Defected Items

Since we print things by hand, there are bound to be human errors! This is why we launched our graveyard collection which hosts defected products at a reduced cost. From print clarity or mishaps, design malfunctions, fabric quality or defects, stains / ink speckles and more, no product goes unloved. Shop our Graveyard Collection Here.

Help us be better!

As we slowly grow into the brand we aspire to be, we ask for your patience along this journey. If you identify ways in which we can improve, please contact us! Sometimes we don't realize there's a better alternative & other-times we can't find one on our own. Your guidance and insight is deeply valued. This is a safe learning space for everyone.
